Well its been a while, so i thought id post (cant let harry have all of the limelight)

So i thought id show you what i do for kicks…

Stereotyping is the lazy way out. It is easier to categorise people in advance so you feel safer around them. If you are intimidated by a Hell’s Angel it is easy to class him as a long haired, chain-smoking violent weirdo. He might well be a loving father of three but you don’t dare take the chance.

Today I ask you if you are stereotypical. This isn’t a blame game: just ask yourself the questions below and answer your self honestly. You might want to leave a comment to tell us your answers. Play it the way you want, ok?

Here goes:

Do you think people wearing hooded tops are violent vandals?

Do you think all young people are aggressive yobs?

Do you think black/white people are violent and unfriendly?

Do you think old people are just boring old codgers with nothing to say?

Do you think smokers have a lack of morals?

Do you think young mothers and fathers are irresponsible?

Do you think old people are grumpy and trapped in the past?

I think if we all answer honestly we can all agree that stereotyping is inherent in all of us.

One of the great things about Firefox is how easy it is to use with a keyboard. I’ve been trying it out for a few days. It is quite easy once you know the commands.

To go forward a page press Alt + Right arrow key. To go back a page press Alt + Left arrow key.

To open a new tab press Ctrl + T. The browser puts the selector on the address bar as soon as you open a new tab. This makes it nice and easy to open a tab and type the address quickly.

To close a tab press Ctrl + W to close the current tab.

To fill out a form press the Tab key to jump down a box. This is a standard command for most programs.

To go to your Home page press Alt + Home. Makes sense doesn’t it?

To select the web search box on the Navigation Toolbar press Ctrl + K.

To bring up your History press Ctrl + H. This is a great way to check your housemates recent internet exploits… Not that I’m encouraging snooping.

Install SwiftTabs extension at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/380/. This allows you to set additional controls for your tabs. I have it set up so the Left arrow key moves me a tab left and the Right arrow key a tab right. Also I have set the End key to close the current tab.

As you can see Firefox is very keyboard friendly. Yet another recent to boycott Uncle Microsoft…

Racism is never something that happens randomly or without stimulus. It is the result of constant exposure to certain factors that shape our personal responses.

Upbringing
Parents can have a massive effect on their children. Everytime they react harshly to a person of another race they are teaching their children the subconscious message that this is ‘the right thing to do’. Hatred inherited from family is the hardest to eradicate as it is so deeply embedded in a person’s personality. It can become part of what they are.

Peer pressure
Your friends can have a similar affect on you to your parents. After all these are your chosen favourite companions so you are most likely to listen to them. It is also very difficult to stand up to your friends as you risk rejection. This means that you are more likely to go along with their behaviour and adopt it yourself.

Personal experience
If you are assaulted by a person of another race you are likely to adopt a fear of people of that race. This isn’t your fault; it is a natural human reaction for self-preservation. Likewise a colleague or a friend who betrays you is likely to colour your opinion of that person’s race and culture. It is hard to kick racism born from personal experience; it goes against your survival instinct.

Tony Blair will be bundled out of the Labour Party as soon as they can make it. If not they’ll probably throw him in front of a bus. Such is the destructive manner of British politics. It’s enough to make you smile.

The question is this: what will Mr Blair leave behind?

Well for one Britain will have to live with the fallout from his disastrous foreign policies. I am sure Blair’s overseas intent is purely compassionate but he needs to stop poking his nose into other countries business. He has simply added another ingredient to the political turmoil in other countries. Okay so the aforementioned companies should have told him to piss off but technically he had no right to be there in the first place. He will leave us a lot of hacked off friends in far countries.

The other items in Blair’s armoury of balls-ups are the continuing situations in Iraq and Afghanistan. By blatantly kissing Bush’s ass he has got British troops into irreversible positions abroad. We can’t leave because the Shi’ites will blow everyone up and we can’t stay because the Shi’ites and co will blow us up. Hmm tricky situation.

And yes he will also leave a company drowned in a tide of political correctness and political bullshit. Blair has done for British traditions what Vesuvius did for Pompeii. Snuffed them out. Now everyone hates each other and nobodies’ sure what we’re going to be arrested for next. Woopee.

Blair has done the whole world a favour by choosing to bow out (albeit it not that willingly). Hopefully we can pick up the pieces he’s left (and shoot his Press Officers and Spin Doctors). And hopefully, please God, we won’t get Gordon Brown as the next Prime Minister. Because he will be worse. Unfortunately from where I’m sitting it really doesn’t look good at the moment.

Grab your morals and guillotines people because the state of British politics is worse than ever.

Let’s clear up a misconception. It’s often thought that Britain is letting everyone from all over the world just walk in to the country. That’s not true. It was true in the past but now Britain is getting tough on foreign immigration. Asylum seekers are rounded up and sent back home. The politicians are bowing under the weight of media pressure and kicking them out. But never has there been a time when we needed to welcome them most.

The world is in turmoil. Take it or leave it. The whole earth is wrapped in conflict and quite a lot of it is the West’s fault. We invade their country or sell them weapons. But when refugees from Afghanistan and Iraq knock on our front door we kick them out.

Imagine this: you’re a refugee from Baghdad. You have spent a year dodging car bombs and looters to raise enough money to get a ticket out. But when you get your plane ticket and arrive in the UK you are told that it is not enough. What is enough you might ask? Who knows?

My issue is this: these people have sold their soul on a chance of rescue. Can you imagine living in a country where you are in constant and real danger; no rights, no protection and no place to call home? Would you not give everything you have to escape? To pursue a better life?

Officials in the UK are quite prepared to ignore the crying children and the desperate adults. They don’t think that the children have a right to a childhood or the adults a right to a home.

The war-torn countries can kill a person’s soul; custom officials can destroy their hope.

I say we let all the asylum seekers in and be better people for it.

You’re definitely not a racist you think. Maybe people would vouch that you’re not. But they’d be wrong.

Let me ask a few questions. You can tell me your answers if you want. Here goes:

How many black friends do you have?

Do you have any black friends?

When was the last time you invited a black person inside your home?

Have you ever invited a black person inside your home?

Have you ever had a black partner?

Do you consider foreigners as just the faces behind the counter?

I think if we all ask ourselves these questions we can honestly understand that we are all racists. As a character in Ian Rankin’s Fleshmarket Close once said: ‘We are all racist, Inspector…even me. It is how we deal with that ugly fact that is important.’
